She credits her growing love for storytelling to several years she spent in Kerala, India as a Fulhright scholar some 30 years ago.
She chose this ancient city in southwest India to study because she wanted to learn about “Kathakali” dance and drama theater. Kathakali is considered one of the oldest theatre forms in the world and has been passed down from generation to generation for hundreds of years.
Like “Kabuki" theatre in Japan, Kathakali is a classical form of community theatre based on a living tradition of storytelling, dance and drama.
What Portman learned in India is an inspiration for everything she does now.
