The area of Mosby’s operations, comprising most of Loudoun, Fauquier and Fairfax counties, has come to be known as Mosby’s Confederacy. Ibday it is easy to notice the many brown highway signs that announce you are in a “Mosby Heritage Area” as you drive through the Piedmont.
And of course Mosby conducted side operations in adjacent counties such as Rappahannock where he had a “safe house” headquarters in Woodville. By 1864, however, as many as 10,000 federals were assigned to suppressing Mosby’s activities and the tide of operations began inexorably to shift— with Mosby becoming the hunted as often as the hunter.
The communities of Telegraph, Gunston, Colchester, Beulah and Franconia were also sites of engagements and intrigue.
