While Board member Crocker played devil's advocate and queried about the benefits of a rubberized' track versus asphalt, athletic director Allen Comer was there to offer his advice.
“Asphalt gets no kinder with time,” said Comer. “It only hardens with age and will be like that parking lot out front.”
“A rubberized track surface is much easier on the runner. They will suffer less from shin splints and other injuries.”
Comments from the audience focused on cost and concern that the track wasn't shoe-homed’ into the existing area available.
“You are the landlord, which is good,” stressed Bernard. “You don't have land costs added into this.”
“Aside from constraints of being close to the property line, the track is regulation.”
