Once the participating children are selected, the parents are contacted for their approval and permission for their child to attend.
The children will meet at the Sheriffs Office where they will be paired with a uniformed officer who will assist the children with their purchases. The children will then be driven to K-Mart in Front Royal, where they can purchase $100 worth of merchandise for themselves or their families.
Once the shopping is completed, the children will have an opportunity to eat breakfast with the officers and visit with Santa Claus. While doing so, volunteers will wrap the presents the children selected. The children will return to the Sheriffs Office after breakfast to receive their wrapped presents and a food basket for each family.
After observing Rappahannock’s “Shop with a Deputy” event, the Front Royal Fraternal Order of Police officers and deputies began its own program last year. It was very successful too.
The Rappahannock program has been an incredible success the last seven years, and the Sheriffs Office hopes to make it even better this year. Citizens and business owners are being asked to sponsor a child. A taxdeductible contribution may be sent to “Shop with a Deputy.” All contributions go toward the enrichment of Rappahannock County children’s lives.
The Sheriffs Office is very excited about this project and hopes to involve at least 60 children this year.
