RPG (rocket propelled grenade) at the next Humvee that comes into his area. When is America’s leadership going to at least acknowledge the pain and suffering it is causing Iraqis by its actions? How is it compensating those families whose children or parents have been killed by American soldiers?
Jack Miles, a Jesuit priest (“ God: A Biography”) wrote last July in Commonweal: “Will it be said that in the first preemptive war in American history, Americans did not ask and did not want to know how many Iraqis they had killed and did not consider it their responsibility to so much as notify the orpharts, the widows and the bereaved parents. . . .At the moment, little is being done, a default of simple decency can scarcely fail to discredit the American liberation."
Certainly the press should honor our soldiers who die. Yet they died in a killing profession they chose. The Iraqis did not choose to be invaded. When will the press and members of Congress show an equal interest in them or is that unpatriotic in today’s America?
President Eisenhower said America is not good because it is great, but great because it is good. How can America lead the world if it doesn’t have the moral courage to show remorse and give generous compensation to the Iraqi families which suffered pain and loss no different than have our own, despite our supposedly good intentions?
