The Pilgrims who arrived in this country aboard the Mayflower, on Dec. 11, 1620 came seeking a better life. Their first winter was extremely rough, but their harvest of 1621 was bountiful.
In celebration, the colonists held a three-day feast and invited the Indians who had .helped them survive their first year. They feasted on fish, wild fowl, venison, shellfish, boiled pumpkin, fried bread made of com, plums and dried fruits.
These “thanksgiving” celebrations were held sporadically over the years (1623, 1676,1777, 1789) until 1863, when Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a national day of Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving Day was observed yearly until sanctioned by Congress, in 1941, as a legal holiday to be held on the fourth Thursday in November.
