Giving thanks
The past year the world has faced horror, fear,
and death from war and destruction in Iraq,
to worldwide senseless bombings and terrorism, to the sniper trials in southern Virginia that have rekindled the raw emotions wrought by a rampage of murder.
And now Thanksgiving, that most American of ' holidays, is upon us. This is the only holiday that always occurs on a Thursday, allowing many folks an extended break from their daily jobs.
From across the country and around the world, family and friends gather together, perhaps for the only time this year. For others, with family members absent or gone, the holiday may be less joyful as they remember happier Thanksgivings past. And for some, the holiday may be just another humdrum day spent at work so that others can enjoy the day.
Here in Rappahannock County we have our share of controversy—“the” calendar, to pave or not to pave, junk cars, signs and billboards, lighting, commercial development, “dream home” denied and many others. Some of these issues influenced our recent local elections and are topics for daily discussion and argument, but hopefully, we can, in the end, agree to disagree.
World and national problems seem remote, surrounded as we are by unspoiled hills, woods and fields. All of us have a lot to be thankful for, and we must look for those areas of agreement in our community, rather than dwell on those issues which divide us.
