Yes, American troops have a difficult and dangerous task of fighting urban guerrilla warfare for which the vast majority is not trained. Using F16 ordinance to kill terrorists in Baghdad will only assure more innocent Iraqi deaths, more local RPG shooters and more hatred. Four Israeli domestic security chiefs (The Washington Post 11/15) have just spoken out against Ariel Sharon’s strate- • gy of reprisals and the degrading, hopeless treadmill of death and hatred they were party to—using the same self defeating “ get tough” tactics the U.S. is now beginning to imitate in Iraq.
There is a child’s trick toy called a Chinese finger trap. It is a woven elastic tube. The child is asked to put a finger in each end of the tube. Then the child is asked to pull its fingers out. When the child does the obvious and starts pulling both its fingers, the tube simply tightens more. As the child struggles, it gets still tighter. Depending on the age of the child, the adult has to tell it to stop pulling and do the just opposite. The trap will then relax its grip. Right now this administration is in the Chinese finger trap. But is it an adult or a child?
