Another mentor who is in her 80s said, “My only regret is that I didn’t sign up sooner when I had more energy. The relationship we have built is something we both will cherish long after it is over.”
The success and growth of the program has been rewarding for those who have chosen to participate on any level. The training program is open to interested community members and those who may be considering becoming a mentor are encouraged to attend these sessions.
Three in-service trainings a year are also offered to enhance effective listening skills, positive communication, self esteem building, goal setting and problem solving techniques and these are open to anyone who has gone through the training. Even if a match is never made, these skills can be applied in any relationship in life and prove to bring success at work, at home and within a community.
One aspect of the program, which requires community support, is to further expand activity options for the matched pairs to enjoy together locally. Being in a rural environment requires a need to be creative in planning after school or weekend activities. Many mentors take trips to the library, enjoy reading, knitting, sewing, baking or walks together. The more active children enjoy biking, hiking, playground time, trips to the movies, bowling or visits to surrounding counties.
A community resource list is beginning to grow of residents who would like to offer mentors an event or unique visit that would be special for the children to experience. A wagon ride with Belgium horses, a trip to a llama farm and a stroll through lovely gardens and a bird sanctuary are some of the options already offered. The county is full of people whose generous sharing of career or skills could introduce a young person to possibilities for their future.
The program can only grow as fast as there are new mentors to train and just this month, nine community members have stepped up to be included in this fall’s training.
