Robert McNamara wrote that the first important lesson he drew from his Vietnam debacle was the importance of “empathizing” with the enemy. It would seem this administration and most of Congress has yet to absorb this lesson in Iraq.
A gjeat weakness of Americans in relating to the rest of the world is their difficulty empathizing with people and countries that are different, especially if they are small and weak. Since 1812, Americans have not experienced what it means to be invaded and occupied, to feel powerless and humiliated. Why else is it so difficult for the Pentagon to grasp who they are fighting'.’ They talk of “Dead-ender Baathists” and “foreigners” but seem to overlook the obvious. Why the surprise that those nabbed as the culprits who almost killed deputy defense secretary Paul Wolfowitz were all Iraqis, not even A1 Qaeda Iraqis?
