Robin Purnell’s work is a surreal application of the techniques of the masters in portrayals of subjects she has known from the once “hidden” Central Asian countries to Russia to rural Virginia. A prolific and widely-traveled artist, Purnell's portraits include visages captured in travel on horseback across the steppes of Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan.
Purnell’s portion of the show also reflects a long-term project to visually record an interesting mix of Americans: Rappahannock County musicians, farmers, lawyers, stonemasons, dancers and tradesmen, all of whom live and work side bv side.
Mary Mochary of the Board of Directors, The National Museum of Women in the Arts said of Purnell: “Her exquisite portraits are an entire narrative of the life and times of her subject. . . ."
