Once the relationship is established, mentors, through their committed presence, convey two messages to their mentees: “I enjoy spending time with you because of who you are” and “Together we can explore our surroundings so that you can discover more about yourself and what you are interested in."
It is through role modeling, sharing interests and experiences and the caring relationship that develops that the young people involved begin to see not only new possibilities but also a new vision of themselves. A mentor can stimulate and support a young person's growth in character and competence long into the future, even if the relationship ends after the one-year commitment.
Through experience, it has been found, however, that seldom do these matches end after a year, due to the fact that both child and adult are having so much fun.
