The investigating officer, Trooper J. L. Felts, said the cycle hit the guard rail with such force it knocked out an eight-inch thick wooden post. Felts too said that excessive speed was a factor in the accident.
Chandran was thrown from the motorcycle and killed. With the permission of a medical examiner, rescue workers declared him dead on the scene. The Washington Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company took the body to Culpeper Hospital.
Sgt. Settle said they could not estimate the speed of the Suzuki 2001 GSXR7 motorcycle, but some of the “rockets” as they are called can travel at speeds of 120 miles an hour. Settle said there were skid marks showing that Chandran tried to stop before his death.
The main group of motorcyclists had gone ahead, but a colleague of Chandran's was traveling behind him and saw the accident, Felts said. The other motorcyclists in his group came back when they realized there had been an accident, Felts said.
Passersby stopped to help and traffic was slowed near the accident. Washington and Sperryville rescue squads responded as did the Sperryville Fire Department, Felts said.
As soon as favorable weather arrives, Rappahannock County is a target for pleasureriding motorcyclists, Sheriff Larry Sherertz said in an interview. The beautiful scenery, smooth roads and twisting turns challenge motorcycle riders, he said.
