Sawyers sees the Web site as a beginning step to get teachers nationwide connected — and, she hopes, to create a movement to ignite activism and real, meaningful education reform.
“I hear so many frustrated voices,” sighed Sawyers. “Many of them are anonymous. They tell me that they are afraid to attend School Board meetings, it’s sort of an unspoken rule, that if they stir things up they could lose their jobs.
“It’s unbelievable. Is this what we really want?” queried Sawyers as she shrugged her shoulders.
“Teachers feel powerless, and the function of education should be to create a citizenship where education and the community are both participants.
“How a teacher feels is reflected in the classroom,” continued Sawyers. “It affects how he or she does her job.
“It’s very inspiring when they share their views,” continued Sawyers. “Some feel alone, others are afraid, but I can feel their strength.”
Before Sawyers took to the classroom, she was working on Capital Hill as an aide to Rep. Patsy Mink (Hawaii), who was active on an education work force committee.
