Fourteen-year-old Nicole Espinola has won second place in the instrumental category of a regional music competition sponsored by the Lions Clubs in the area.
Espinola, a pianist, and vocalist Brian Taylor, 17, represented the Rappahannock County Lions Club at the regional Lions Club Bland music competition held last Saturday in Warrenton.
The two had been among 16 Rappahannock County musicians competing for scholarships at The Theatre on Gay Street on Feb. 29 in the 56th annual James A. Bland Memorial Music Contest sponsored by the Rappahannock Lions Club.
At the regional competition, Espinola won a $50 second prize and was one of three pianists and one violinist competing in the instrumental category. There were four different Lions Clubs represented in the regional competition.
Each year the Lions clubs of Virginia host local contests to promote an awareness of music in the lives of school children and young adults. Cash awards are presented to winners, runners-up and third place in vocal and instrumental categories in both elementary and high school.
Entries are accepted from contestants who live in Rappahannock County or attend school in the county. Home schooled children are also eligible.
At the Feb. 29 local competition in Rappahannock, the 16 contestants performed before an audience of more than 100 family members, friends and community observers.
