Another of van Dort’s “adaptive reuse” projects is the transformation of the 1906 Washington School building on Mt. Salem Avenue in Washington into a set of apartments and after-school care facilities.
William Carrigan, the late philanthropist, bought the school and donated the property to the Child Care and Learning Center, a private group which has its after school care facility there for children between the time they get out of school and their parents get off work.
Van Dort, who is a former president of CCLC’s board of directors, has her own private contracting crew. The board received approval to build apartments in the front part of the building for middle income teachers and others to help financially support the child care activities. The apartments are expected to be available in early spring.
They have been built in old classrooms, planned for two persons each, and designed to help young teachers and law enforcement personnel find decent house in the county.
Van Dort said “adaptive reuse allows for the maintenance of the historic features of the town” and the continuation of the sense of Rappahannock as a place that has preserved its heritage.
