The store shelves, she found, had been built to the size of two food cans so that they were too small for computer boxes, but she repainted them and they now display a handsome collection of antique coffee and cookie tins.
The space gives her office work areas for Jennings Hobson, a certified computer technician, whose father is the Rev. Jennings Hobson III, an Episcopal minister in Washington and for Fran Eldred, the office manager. Eldred is a third generation Rappahannock native and a contact with many of the county’s old hands.
Upstairs in what was the dry goods section, van Dort built an apartment for young Hobson. On a normal day, Blue, Hobson’s and van Dort’s 10month-old black Labrador is on hand to greet visitors.
The store was there so long, van Dort notes, that sometimes men come late on Friday evening to buy a six pack of beer.
Perhaps the central value of “adaptive reuse” is that the store retains the charm and quaintness of Woodville while it houses a thoroughly 21st Century computer world.
