types of VDOT signs in Rappahannock County. Maxwell Carpenter, the head of VDOTs Traffic Maintenance Operations, estimates there are about 3,000 along our roadways. The 911 signs, those with the names of roads, streets, and private lanes, are the property of the county VDOT has nothing to do with these. They are funded out of the 911 fee on vour telephone bill.
At least the Sperryville stop sign retired with honors. According to Ray Gore, it was the top “whacked-down" sign in the entire nine counties making up VDOT’s Culpeper District. From January 2002 through January 2004, it was run over 20 times. One week, it was whacked-down three times.
James Shaw, of Shaw’s Services on the corner, commented that pickup trucks took out many of the signs. Pete Estes, who lives nearby, was used to the sound of the crumbling metal. He noted that most whack-downs occurred late at night or in the early hours of the morning, and he was impressed that many tractor-trailer truck drivers stopped to remove the destroyed sign from the roadway before continuing on.
And so another bit of information about Rappahannock County enters the dustbin of history. “Sic Transit Gloria.” ,
