VDOT has finally thrown in the towel. The stop sign in the middle of Route 522 at its intersection with Route 211 in Sperryville is gone for good. After years of having their sign repeatedly whacked down, VDOT removed the last one on Feb. 11 still intact, and filled in the posthole. A larger stop sign, 48-inches wide instead of the usual 30-inches, has been placed to the right of the roadway.
The key question, and one that makes every Rappahannock County citizen as nervous as a hen with only one chick, is whether a flashing light or a traffic light is in the works for the intersection. Steve Black, District Traffic Engineer at VDOT’s Culpeper District office, says no.
“Traffic is approaching the intersection slowly on Route 522, and the new larger sign is quite visible,” he said. A “stop sign ahead” sign is also in place.
You have to hand it to VDOT, though. They put up a great fight. At the time of the “Great Sperryville Turn Lane Discussion of 1997," the stop sign was on a small wedgeshaped island. Vehicles would ride over the island and whack down the stop sign. After the turn lanes were constructed, the stop sign was out there all by its lonesome and the carnage began in earnest.
