Sawyers said she saw firsthand how “politicking” works. “These experts in pedagogy and academia are coming up with things that don’t really address the real needs of teachers,” she said. *
Right now, Sawyers is feeling fearless as she pursues her mission of starting a national movement, a coalition of teachers.
“I’ve been open with Mr. Quinn (headmaster at Wakefield) about what I’m doing,” said Sawyers who realizes that her position as a teacher in a private school gives her more latitude than if she were teaching in the public school system.
In fact, the other main organizer of this movement is a public school teacher in Fairfax County who prefers that her name not be printed.
Sawyers said, “Teachers, whether in a private or public school, it doesn’t matter, are important people in a child’s life and they share many of the same challenges of how to best do their jobs when faced with so many mandates.
“There is no time for a teacher to be wise, no time for a teacher to genuinely let that child know that they are cared for and loved.”
