Virginia State Police Sgt. Gary Settle, a former Rappahannock County sheriff, has been named the new head of the Warrenton State Police office which oversees Rappahannock.
Settle, 42, will be promoted to first sergeant when he returns for his third stint in the Area 12 Office next month.
“On one hand I think (the job) will be a challenge, but I’ve spent most of my career in Fauquier and Rappahannock so I am coming back to an area I know,” Settle said. “I am excited and I am looking forward to it.”
Settle succeeds First Sgt. Ed Murphy who is transferring to the Area 26 Office in Whytheville, Va. The move is effective July 10.
According to Murphy, his job change was prompted by financial considerations. Specifically, he cited a lower cost of living as the primary factor. His new job will also provide an opportunity for professional growth, he said.
Settle is currently the public information officer at the Division 2 Office in Culpeper. Prior to that he worked in the Area 12 office for a few months. He has also worked as a special agent in the narcotics division.
