and remote sensing, it facilitates societal objectives from allowing farmers to plot seed and fertilize to helping county governments track development and estimate such diverse things as hospital requirements and sewer hookups.
Just this year, the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service began training for farmers and agriculturists across the state, equipping each agent with a Garmin Etrex Legend GPS receiver so they can provide training.
The course came to Rappahannock County as the result of the work of a citizen-educator team including Beverly Hunter, a nationally recognized expert on Geospatial Technology, Bob Chappell, Superintendent of Schools, Roger Mello, principal of the high school, foundation grantwriter Amy Silver and two teachers, Ron Vickers and Beth Gall.
Beverly Hunter made the original suggestion for the course and with the help of Amy Silver, who writes grant applications for the Headwaters Foundation, arranged for the schools to apply to the state for the use of ESRI software. As part of a national marketing program, ESRI has supplied free training and software across the country.
Vickers and Gall will be teaching the course with the help of Hunter. Vickers was sent to a training seminar earlier this year and is spending the summer in further training as he prepares a curriculum and plan for the 36-week course. The former U.S. Marine engineer and experienced technology teacher is already comfortable with this new language.
Vickers said in an interview that the course moved forward because the new superintendent “Bob Chappell is open to a lot of ideas.” Vickers said it is one of the most important developments since vocational training was begun at Rappahannock high school at the close of the Piedmont Vocational Training School.
