An excerpt from Joy Lorien's writings

I surely live in a Zen state here on the west side of the Blue Ridge in a sweet place called Jewell Hollow and as I was sitting out on the porch reading yesterday, a red pileated woodpecker, who lives in the neighborhood, flew in singing loudly for all to hear and began pecking on a dead hemlock tree. What a wonderful site as I saw it again this morning pecking away at the dead trees. The hummingbirds returned as did our friendly neighborhood bear. It was frolicking on our neighbors’rocks yet some have complained its getting a little pesky turning over pots and things. Duke my dog seems to distract it from here.

Spring is just arriving on top of the Drive and it is a breathtaking site to go up there after it rains and see the blue skies and light green energy emerging everywhere eclipsing somewhat the darkness of the burnt forest. About three miles up there is a field of fiddlestick ferns that are awesome to watch unfurl and the azaleas are just emerging. I got my first picture of that elusive yellow lady slipper though they are probably finishing up their dance by now. The face of Stonyman as you first approach it stands ablaze with that new green growth and her sentinels stand proudly overlooking the valley. Old Rag has got that golden glow right now but is quickly peaking as the greening spreads upward. Bears seem abundant this year and I got a picture of some cubs up a tree looking for their mother as she hid behind a tree somewhat up the road. Pregnant deers and little fawns seem to be everywhere. The bucks are just emerging with their little velvet horns and an occasional bobcat has crossed my path. The loss of the Mountain Laurel blooming this year will be missed yet some may make a showing.
