New laws taking effect this week will impact nearly everyone in the community, whether it is senior citizens looking to renew their driver’s licenses or students who are squeamish about science class dissection.
As is the case every year, July 1 ushers in a variety of new laws and changes to existing ones approved months earlier by the Genera] Assembly and the governor.
Some of the changes, like the tax increases approved as part of the new state budget, will not take effect until Sept. 1.
Others, like the Affirmation of Marriage Act, throw Virginia into the spotlight of a national debate.
Here is a sampling of some of the new laws and changes.
