Hunter said the career opportunities are very real. “Civil engineering, map making, geography, government local and national... all are places where aspects of GIS (and GPS) are being used,” she said. There are internships and advanced college programs also available.
Hunter, Silver and others are thinking about a “community mapping program,” which would give students hands on field experience gathering information through GPS and using it in GIS applications. It would also provide vital data for county needs and projects like Rappahannock’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan.
