THE FUNERAL
TRADITION The Nearfderthal's were the first humans known to hold funeral services. Close examination of their burial sites reveals that they buried their dead in a very specific manner. Many of the dead were laid in an east/west orientation, corresponding to the rising and setting of the sun. It is quite remarkable that many of the dead were set in a fetal position, which echoes the arc of life from the womb to the grave. In addition, in many of the early burial sites, an unusually high amount of pollen was present, perhaps an indication that flowers were part of the burial ceremony. By all these indications, the tradition of the funeral may be 50,000 to 90,000 years old.
