He was working in Culpeper when he decided to make a bid for Rappahannock sheriff in 1995. He was elected, but only served one term before returning to work with the state police.
“Becoming Rappahannock County sheriff was something I always wanted to do,” he said. “There was a constituency that thought a change was needed. The challenge was enormous, and when I left after four years public perception (of the office) was high. But I still felt that tug from the state police.”
Upon his return to the state police in 2000, Settle was assigned to the Area 12 Office, where he worked for about two years. During that time, he worked with Murphy and gained a healthy respect for his work ethic.
“Ed’s a worker,” he said. “I hope to be able to carry on his work.”
Murphy, who has been with the Virginia State Police for more than 15 years, has fond memories from his time here.
“It has been a very eventful two and a half years,” said Murphy, 37. “There have been major political changes in the county. There were major criminal cases as well as traffic incidents.”
Murphy could not single one out, however. “They were all valuable experiences and they all made me a better person,” he said.
Mostly Murphy said he will miss the people. Specifically, he said he would miss the troopers under his command and the citizens with whom he has worked.
Looking ahead, Murphy said he thinks his successor will also bring “a lot of positive changes to the Warrenton post.
“Sgt. Settle has experience as a supervisor,” he noted. “He is a former Rappahannock County sheriff, so he is very well versed in the political side (of the job).”
