Sen. Russell Potts says he voted against repeal of the Blue Laws. He was not aware of the effort’s unintended consequences.
“I thought our state employees ought not have to work on Sundays. Sundays are a day of rest at least, if not worship."
Potts said the governor will have to decide what to do with the law as it currently stands. “I'm sure he will do anything he can do temporarily, but having a special session for one piece of legislation is highly unlikely.”
Ellen Qualls, Warner’s press secretary, yesterday said that the Department of Labor and Industry has decided to take a “commonsense approach to enforcement” of this law. “That means they will investigate egregious complaints.”
Yesterday’s press release from labor law enforcers said, “On July 1, when the legislation becomes effective, most employees in Virginia will be entitled to a day of rest and they will be able to choose to have Sunday or Saturday as their day of rest. The Department of Labor and Industry enforces the laws that govern the work place in Virginia.”

“You can’t have a B & B without help on Sundays,” John Hearty railed goodnaturedly upon hearing about the new law. “It’s nuts. They have to fix it.”
Hearty, owner of The Plains' Grey Horse Inn, said Sunday’s are busy check-in and check-out days. “If my people decide not to work on Sundays, I’ll have to do the work myself.”
Another local businessman wanted his name with*held. “I’d prefer not to get our employees all riled up,” he said. “This Sunday is July Fourth, one of our busiest days of the year."
