Although Virginia is classified by the Centers for Disease Control as a low risk area for Lyme disease, cases among Rappahannock residents are slowly on the rise.
“I’m seeing at least one case per week,” said Dr. John McCue of Mountainside Medicine in Washington. “I find it to be much more common here than it was in my previous practice in Florida.”
McCue said that the disease is very tricky to diagnose, because some patients show strong symptoms but have negative lab results, while others exhibit few symptoms and test positive for the disease.
“It’s a very unusual disease,” he said. “I try to be proactive in my treatment because it’s not worth it to wait.”
