The father was Fonzie, the dolphin that had worked such wonders a decade or so earlier with Joe Hoagland, the son of the founders of Island Dolphin Care. Fonzie was the catalyst that sparked Joe’s recovery from paralysis and partial blindness and so was also the cause for the establishment of the non-profit program.
Island Dolphin Care offered the Jenkins’ family a scholarship to bring Johnny back in August for a second session, but the Florida heat and sunshine takes a toll on the child, and travel is so difficult that they decided they couldn’t accept the offer.
They’re hoping that the scholarship will be extended again next spring. And they’re also praying that their son won’t need a tracheotomy to ease his breathing in the interim, since that procedure could put an end to dreams of a second visit with dolphins.
One day at a time
For now, they’re simply taking in the joy. “We accomplished what we said we wanted to do,” Michelle said. “We play the sounds of the ocean, rivers and waterfalls for Johnny at night, and over the monitor we can hear him laughing and giggling. We believe that the dolphins gave Johnny a little more hope to try harder and keep fighting. That’s our miracle.”
