Dr. Lilian Peake, district health director for Rappahannock-Rapidan, said that any increase in the number of cases reported is scrutinized carefully. “We have to be careful not to overreact to any increase unless there is substantial background data that shows a trend or significant problem.” Which, she noted, is not the case here. “Any increases we have seen may just be due to better communication with doctors and hospitals responsible for reporting these cases.”
According to the May issue of the Virginia Epidemiology Bulletin, there was a 30 percent increase in the incidence of Lyme disease in 2003 when compared to the latest five-year average. 195 cases were reported statewide
