Iraqi politics and the political handover after resisting UN involvement? How about the following recent “flip-flops” from Mr. Bush’s speech at the Republican convention: (a) pledging to “double the number of people served by our principal job training program” when for the past four years he has been cutting funding for such programs and when his 2005 budget calls for training and vocational education to be cut by 10 percent; (b) calling for an increase in funding for community colleges while cutting the largest direct aid initiative to community colleges by almost 25 percent; (c) pledging to expand a program of grants for low and middle income families despite having called for a freeze or cut in these programs for three straight years.
We have a chance for a serious debate here about important issues whose outcome will be affected by this election. But let’s have a relevant debate without using misleading labels and half-truths. As the late Senator Moynihan famously said: “Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not to their own facts.”
