Volunteers from Rappahannock County work to make a difference in the lives of children with cancer.
Camp Fantastic—a program offered by a Winchesterbased group called Special Love—offers children of all ages who are living with cancer the chance to enjoy a week-long camp experience in August. The camp is held at the 4-H educational center in the Blue Ridge Mountains south of Front Royal.
Volunteers from Rappahannock pitch in to serve the food, make flower arrangements, organize games, create camp decorations, and clean up after the fun is over.
“It so humbles me to see these kids,” said Capt. Jeff Brown, Rappahannock County High School’s resource officer and an annual volunteer at Camp Fantastic. “They are so grateful for every little thing you do for them. There is a lot to learn from this experience and from the good folks in our county who step forward to help.”
Camp Fantastic is just like any other summer camp, except its’ special focus is on the needs of children with cancer. It offers the campers a chance to leave the hospital behind and enjoy a week of activities like
