Instead of asking what this fleeting flowering behavior is for, it might be more helpful to ask what causes it to happen. The regulator appears to be a circadian biological clock. The trigger is endogenous and turned on every 24 hours without much regard to external conditions.. Circadian behaviors are known for all organisms, and in plants they include leaf folding, nectar production and flower opening. In humans, they are responsible for the jet-lagged feeling we experience when we cross too many time zones.
The short but impressive flowering habit of these plants is thought to be the origin of the name fameflower since “fame is fleeting.” But we found out that it’s actually a case of an erroneous translation of a scientific name.
