Mighty mentor
According to Greek mythology, Mentor was a
loyal adviser to Odysseus. He was entrusted
with the care and education of Odysseus and Penelope's son Telemachus. Telemachus grew in selfconfidence and assertiveness as he awaited his father’s return.
Mentoring is now a common term for a wise and trusted counselor but a true mentor is a rare and treasured commodity.
While there is no question that there is much to be treasured in Rappahannock County in terms of scenic beauty and a spirit to conserve and protect, there is perhaps even more to be said of its people and their heart.
Captain Jeff Brown was honored recently by being one of only two officers to receive an award for his work in the D.A.R.E. Program.
Making a difference in a young person s life is what Brown is all about but you wouldn't hear that from him. He isn't into self-promoting about himself even if the cause is honorable and to be praised.
Brown leads by example in his every action and word and his work among the youth and community of Rappahannock County is fast becoming legendary. He does it with a spirit of genuine caring and always with a smile on his face.
His innovative and creative ways to bring joy into the lives of young children while at the same time teaching them - most importantly about making wise decisions — has won him a long fan list among law enforcement, county and school administrators, teachers, parents and the youth of this county.
Brown is a shining example of mentoring at its finest - done from the heart with young hearts in mind.
