One of the defining aspects of life in Rappahannock is its historical connection with agriculture. In a manner far out of proportion to the actual number of people owning or working on farms, farming s impact on the culture, the landscape and the self-identity of Rappahannock are enormous. Rappahannock County is a sort of produce mecca, where there are no large chain grocery stores, yet if you keep track of what’s in season, you can fill your larder with asparagus, strawberries, cherries, peaches, apples, organic beef, .heirloom tomatoes and much much more, all of far better quality than the fare at the nearest big chain retail outlet.
A large plurality of our county - and our country- find farming a noble and important endeavor that should be fostered and preserved. Despite this broad support, small farmers have been squeezed and threatened for decades now. From Farm Aid festivals to country music songs, their plight has become almost a clich6 of our times.
