Hemlock Woolly Adeigid: Uroo Killor on tho Move
Hemlocks are unique and versatile landscape trees with excellent shade tolerance. Canadian hemlock is considered to be one of the most graceful and beautiful conifers. Unfortunately, the most difficult problem in growing hemlocks is an insect known as the hemlock woolly adeigid.
The hemlock woolly adeigid. Adetges tsugae, has been in the United States since 1924. This native of Asia is a serious pest of eastern hemlock and Carolina hemlock. The snow white colored insect has caused extensive damage to forests and ornamental plantings of hemlocks from Virginia to New England.
Hemlock woolly adeigid injures hemlocks by sucking sap and by injecting toxic saliva while feeding This causes the needles on infested branches to desiccate and drop from the tree within a few months. Death of major limbs usually occurs within two years and progress from the bottom of the tree upwards. Unprotected trees often die within four years, although some survive longer in a severely weakened condition.
