Region. OK, but there’s nothing abstract about the change this morning as I head for the barn: the dew is cold; my arms are chilled and the air is so clear that for miles around I can see every walnut and sycamore that has begun to yellow.

The hummingbirds must have had a wake-up call, too. After two months of a limitless variety of floral nectars to choose from, they’re finding that most plants have shifted from flowering to seed setting, so they’re back at the feeder this morning, trading flavor for energy as the prospect of the long trip south begins to loom in their miraculous little brains.

For us, the shift is from worrying about weeds and fertilizer to calculating stocks of hay and winter preserves, pulling up the beans and cukes and maybe planting some collards.
