What immediately came to mind listening to his latest CD were bands like Simple Minds, The Beatles, and Pink Floyd, and it would be easy to dismiss this, without listening yourself as a kind of 80s electronica with early 60s rock roots...but that’s what it is. And it is not cheap or shallow. It is the kind of mature and crafted music you wish you had heard back in that turgid decade. And Mason nails it.
Rarely do the first notes of an album hook someone so well that they listen to the complete album non-stop. But that’s what happened with this.
The Annandale, Va., native - who weaves a lot of Civil War history into his songs — is a wonderfully precise tenor, but he can also effect that gravely, down and out blues lament, and much of his songs have the understated backing harmony of a small gospel choir.
