many things that I needed to quickly learn; and I knew that the main goal was to change the culture of the high school from a place where students wondered whether they would go to college to a place where they wondered where they would go to college.
As I sat there on my porch on that cold December night, I also knew I would take the job. Rationally, my brain was busy weighing out pros and cons. Simultaneously, I watched my other life interests raise their eyebrows at me, shrug their shoulders, turn on their heels and head for that crowded and proverbial back-burner. Very quickly, I realized that this opportunity was a calling for me. Not a job, but a gift.
And so, four and a half years after saying “yes” to Mary Anne Biggs, I find myself proud and sad to make this final report to you, the hard-working, problem-solving, occasional punching bags of the Rappahannock County Public School Board. Accomplishments
With the help and encouragement of Headwaters and the dedicated Next Step Board of Directors, in partnership with the RCHS guidance department, administration, and faculty, and the funding from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, generous individual donations and you, the School Board, Next Step has:
• Held 4,215 individual meetings with students and parents;
• Written 16 articles for the Rappahannock News and 36 newsletters;
• Created nine original brochures, a textbook, a comprehensive Web site, a Common Application for
