This does not mean that on occasion adults (e.g., spouses) do not talk out of turn (e.g., nag). In grownup relationships, “shh” is replaced with, “Calm down.” Ironically, “Calm down” has the opposite effect, often baiting a “DON’T TELL ME TO CALM DOWN!” response. Next comes “shut up” (usually in question form, as in “Why don’t you?”), then, if there’s a chance others can overhear the exchange, “Shh!”
And at that stage in the conversation, you might as well be humming “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
