“I felt very welcome down there,” said Hogan, who signed the national letter-of-intent with UVAWise Wednesday afternoon. “They really wanted everything to go through and have me play for them.”
Signing with the Cavs came after months of trying to find the right school in need of his kicking skills. Traditionally, college football programs do not offer punters or placekickers any scholarship money until they sign such skilled positions as quarterback, wide receiver, linebacker and running back. Hogan garnered plenty of interest from Division III schools Shenandoah, Bridgewater, Emory & Henry and Ferrum, Division II schools Clarion (PA), West Liberty (WVA) and Division I-AA VMI.
Even the University of Virginia and N.C. State liked what they saw on a DVD.
Clarion gave Hogan a spot on its 2009 roster with the promise that he could compete for the starting kicking job. So he initially committed to the rural Pennsylvania school.
