Miranda Hope gave the following speech - her final report to the Rappahannock County School Board - on May 12 as she steps down as director of Headwaters’ Next Step Program which has raised significantly the percentage of Rappahannock County High School students going on to college.
Last week I became intimately
familiar with a procedure called an “external version.” The purpose of this procedure is to turn a breech baby - a baby who is not headed in the right direction. The success of this procedure is somewhere around 55 percent.
Now, how hard can it be to turn a 6.5-pound baby who is swimming in water? How tough can that be? I could turn a 200-pound man on a raft in a swimming pool with one finger.
As it turns out, it takes a village to turn a baby - it - takes three experienced, focused doctors with their six hands applying an enormous amount of pressure; it takes two nurses and an ultrasound machine and an entire tube of green gel; it takes a baby w ho is the right size at the right time w'ho will stay put once turned. When it is successful, as it was in my case, it is life-changing and w-orth every risk, every leap of faith, every ounce of effort - just to get that one child headed in the right direction. It was a cause for the 10 people in that small room to gasp and quietly celebrate.
