Holiday's Tragedies
The Memorial Day holiday toolc its toll in n e p r 1 y 400 dead throughout the nation. Some of the tragedy came close to home with the death of two women in an accident near Madison. Natives of Florida, the daughter and mother were killed, the daughter instantly, and the mother died a few hours later in a hospital. The girl was catapaulted from the car into the other auto. It was not a pleasant sight. Another accident occurred on the same road near Leon Sunday afternoon, with two women injured.
Just outside of Orange Saturday a young man ran into the side of a truck killing him almost instantly.
All these wrecks begin to make one frightened to even be on the highways. The road was slick Sun• day afternoon. Creeping along at a Casper Milquetoast speed made one realize that no matter how careful the driver might be, the road is not safe from the other fellow. He may be speeding or driving carelessly and crash headlong into you.
Accidents are hard to understand. Crusades are waged constantly against carelessness. New laws are passed and enforced to protect man from himself. Safety organizations work night and day, with the full co-operation of everyone. Schools begin Peaching safety to the first graders and never let up a year nor a day until the child is graduated—and still the traffic toll mounts with every holiday.
Maybe safety measures are taught until familiarity breeds contempt. Maybe we should neglect all this emphasis on safety and let everyone learn the hard way—by being killed by his own carelessness or the carelePsiyess of others.
The Troopers, ambulance drivers, and rescue squad members may have their jobs. I don’t want ’em. And a safe holiday will be one with your feet propped up in -your own home."
