Of course the first schools in Sperryville, as elsewhere, were private ones. A family or several families would employ a teacher to instruct the children in one of their homes or in the (teacher's home.
At one time the old Baptist church, now the Rappahannock Supply Co-operative building, was used for a school, also for religious services. Then the first public schoolhouse was erected, it was a two-room building known aa “The Little Red School," at' present a part of the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Atkins.
