On Twelve Proposals

At a meeting of the Commiseion of Game and Inland Fisheries held in Richmond on MAy 12, I960 12 proposals to change or amend the game and fish laws were act* ed upon. >

The Commission accepted seven of the proposals as presented, accepted two' proposals as amended, rejected two and tabled one for future action.

Proposals that were accepted by the Commission and will become effective June 16, dealt with changing the deer season in some of the western counties, fixing the opening and closing dates of the quail season west of the Blue Ridge, eliminating the early squirrel season in the counties where such a season had been in effect, prohibiting of fishing in certain sections of the Pedlar River except during trout season, declaring a five year closed season on wild turkeys in Clarke, Craig, Gloucester, Greene, and Mathews counties, setting of opening and closing dates for the turkey hunting season in other counties, the rescinding of a regulation allowing the taking of doe deer in Prince George county, during the jrrst 16 days of the hunting season, and a declaration of' an open season for fishing in Claytor Lake.

Proposals rejected by the Commission include one to extend the bear season in Nelson County and permit the hunting of these animals in snow in this county, and a proposal to open the season on raccoon on November 1 state-wide. In lieu of this proposal the Commission agreed to publish a new proposal to declare the , hunting season on mink, opossum, and racoon from October 16 to January 31 except in National Forest areas and all counties west of the Blue Ridge where the closing date would be January 6. It was agreed to act on this proposal at the next meeting of the Commission on June 16th.
