New records were set at the University of Virginia Hospital and clinics for the year ended June 30, 1964, during which persons came from every Virginia locality for treatment and care at the medical center. The total number of patients hospitalized here during the 12-month period rose to 16,744, an increase of nearly 700 over the previous year. The average daily census for the hospital was 440, a new record, and a total of 160,933 days care were provided during the year, also a record. The hospital’s annual statistical report shows that the out-patient clinics’ total number of visits rose to 94,256— an increase of more than 4,000 over the previous year. Five years ago (1958-59) this figure was 83,815; ten years ago (1953-54) it was 70,064. A total of 5,744 major operations were performed during the year, nearly 1,300 more than five years ago. This increase reflects the role of the University Hospital as a referral center for patients in need of major surgery in many specialties not available ln!'community- hospital's.'"nor,' A total of 166 patients had 1,395 days of care at the hospital.
