Plea Made To Cyclists
Noting a sharp increase in traffic injuries and deaths suffered by young bicyclists during 1964, colonel C. W. Woodson, Jr., Superintendent of State Police and Chairman of the Governor’s Highway Safety Committee, asks that parents exercise stronger supervision over their youngsters’ cycling activities. Last year, he said, there were 17 killed and 713 injured in Virginia, as opposed to 12 killed and 594 injured in 1963. The great majority of the victims were in the 1014 age group with the 5-9 jropp second, “It must be remembered,” he •co'ritlnti&d’, "fhat Virgirtia law (Code 46.1-171) requires that cyclists observe the same traffic rules motorists are required to observe, unless by their very nature they cannot apply. These, of course, include riding on the right side of the road, giving proper hand signals and obeying all traffic signs and markings."
