Prior to the election of mem bers to the Board of Directors and officers, Dr. JohnL. Cues rant of the University of Virginia, president Of the Virginia Thoracic Society, addressed the more than 70 members present at the meeting of the Tuberculosis and Health Association of Northern Virginia last Thursday Night (April 22) in Front Royal.
Illustrating his address with slides, Dr. Guerrant likened the respiratory system to an automobile, with the diaphragm as a piston; the thorax as a cylinder, the muscles in the chest as the motor; the trachea and bronchi as tubing and pipes, and the nervous 6ystern as a governor.
Citing smoking as a partial cause in some diseases, other conditions affecting breathing include obesity, posture, paralysis of the diaphragm, pleura fusion, a leak in the lung, a combination of fluid and air in the lungs, and blood clots and the diseases of chronic bronchitis, emphysema, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and cancer of the lung. Dr. Guerrant said that only a careful examination will determine whether some people have a disease of the chest because all diseases do not greatly interfer with breathing The normal function of the lung, the specialist said, is to provide the* body with oxygen rid the system of caron dioxide and to control the acidity base of the body. Reelected as president of the association was Joe McDaniel of Stanley. Other officers elected by the Board of Directors, immediately following the dinner meeting of the membership, were; Henry A. Lowry of Winchester, vice president; Ray E. Hockman of Naurertown, second vicepresident, Judge Kenneth Rollins of Leesburg, third vicepresident; Mrs. Jason Paige, Jr. of Delaplane, Secretary and Warren H. Goolsby of Front Royal, treasurer. Directors elected from Rap pahannock County were Mrs. W. A. Gentry, Flint Hill and Roy Reeve, Sperryville. A certificate of appreciation for at least 50 hours of services rendered was given to Rappahannock County High School’s commercial class with Mrs. Sally E. Palmer instructor. This group assisted in addressing campaign literature, far the association. Rappahannock News was also given a certificate for volunteer serfice in publicity. night.
