Beat eggs, sugar and shortening until fluffy. Sift dry ingredients, add dates and pecans and mix well. Add alternately with a apple sauce to the butter-sugar mixture. Mix thoroughly and bake in a well buttered tube pan at 325 degrees for one hour. After removing from oven let cake stand one minute before removing from pan. No icing is required but the cake may be served with a hard sauce flavored with rum or sherry wine, or with whipped cream.
